Rebecca the novel was first published in 1938 making Daphne du Maurier one of the most popular authors of the time. Du Maurier herself adapted Rebecca as a stage play in 1939 and it had a successful London run in 1940.
This is the tale of Maxim de Winter's second wife, slowly piecing together her husband's tragic and unhappy past married to the beautiful but treacherous Rebecca. Constantly compared to her predecessor by the house staff, in particular the cruel Mrs Danvers, the young bride finds herself driven close to madness.
Du Maurier creates a facinating web of perceptions that are untangled as the young Mrs de Winter discovers the whole truth about Rebecca.
