Comic Players go well beyond the call of duty

8:45am Friday 27th November 2009, The Marco Players, Neville’s Island, Chorley Old Road Methodist Church Hall

A TEAM-building weekend away proves to be anything but a bonding exercise for company managers when they get stranded on an island in the middle of Derwentwater.

Clashing personalities come to the fore as each of the four men struggles to deal with their predicament.

Tim Firth’s hilarious comedy makes the most of the farcical situations Neville, Gordon, Angus and Roy are in.

Under the direction of Natalie Crompton, The Players excel themselves. From the tetchy and sarcastic Gordon (Paul Costello) to the timid and ultra-prepared Angus (Peter Haslam), all the cast, which includes John Whitehead as Neville and Peter Henrys as Roy, time the laughs to perfection.

Their efforts go beyond the call of duty, crawling onto stage having been drenched with water and rolling in mud to simulate their arrival on the island after their boat sinks in the lake.

Set builders have used ingenuity, as well as plenty of foliage and chipped bark, to create island conditions and the attention to detail really helps produce a believable atmosphere.
